Why do the Dallas Cowboys wear white jerseys at home, and on the road?

In many sports leagues and competitions, a team wears its away kit only when its primary kit would clash with the colours of the home team, while other sports leagues and competitions may mandate that away teams must always wear an alternative kit regardless of a potential colour clash. The latter is common in North American sports, where "colour vs. colour" games (e.g., blue jerseys vs. red jerseys) are a rarity, having been discouraged in the era of black-and-white television. Almost all road uniforms are white in gridiron football and the National Hockey League, while in baseball, visitors typically wear grey. In the National Basketball Association, the Woman's National Basketball Association, and the NCAA basketball, home uniforms are white or yellow, and visiting teams wear the darker colour. At international level, away kits are sometimes worn by both teams in a match. FIFA rules state that in exceptional cases, both teams may be asked by the referee or match commissioner to wear different colours.

The Australian Football League legislates that the home team has the right to choose what home colours they play in for home games during the home and away season. Traditionally in Australian rules football and first introduced into VFL in 1924 the home team wears dark shorts while the away team wears white shorts. In contrast to other sports, the concept of away colours is not prominent, with clubs traditionally wearing their home guernseys week in week out, with the colour of a team's shorts distinguishing between home teams and away teams.

But before high-definition TV came along, that wasn’t the case. Brown with white lettering, and white with brown lettering. Types of NFL jerseys available for each team in big, tall, plus sizes.

England wore the kit in one tournament match, against Argentina. Critics in England in 2010 said the team was changing away kits unnecessarily and too often as a "marketing ploy". Australia, on the other hand, has rarely worn an away kit except against Romania; a white jersey would have been worn in 2011. Australia, however, has a separate green ODI home kit, yellow ODI away kit, and black T20 kit.

Often these are colours that were used in famous victories; for instance Brazil and A.C. So perhaps in the future we’ll see the Cowboys once again go back to the iconic look from the '60s, and potentially wear more navy at home. Just don’t bet any money on Jones doing away with his quirky white uniforms. Just don’t expect to see the Cowboys wearing navy jerseys at AT&T Stadium on a regular basis any time soon … or ever. “Back in the old days, we had a company called Red Fox that designed the uniforms, and that was more of a true gray,” McCord said.

New apparel partner, Dynasty Sport has brought a fresh approach to designs across the Cowboys merchandise range for 2021, with the initial release of on and off-field merchandise now available to preview and pre-order from the online club store. That color has evolved over the years, although only subtly. When the NFL switched to Nike, the color popped even more as a turquoise, blueish gray. It was a completely different color during the Cowboys’ infant years, appearing more like a pure gray.

Aside from the obvious need to distinguish one team from the other, conventional wisdom held that it was more difficult to properly launder uniforms while on a road trip, thus the "road grays" helped to hide accumulated soil. This convention continued well after its original premise was nullified by the issuance of multiple uniforms and the growth of the laundromat industry. For the first time, Bravus Mining & Resources will be emblazoned on the 2021 season jersey sleeve as they become a Platinum Partner of the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys. The company was previously known as Adani and today celebrated the 10-year anniversary of operations in Australia by introducing the Bravus brand.

The England team uses one kit for all home and away ODI and Twenty20 matches. The use of specially-designed Christmas uniforms in NBA games in 2012 led to several "color vs. color" match-ups. FIFA's regulations for the 2014 World Cup mandate that "teams need to have two very distinguishable shirts – where one is a lighter colour and the other is a darker one". Several club and national sides have favourite away colours which might remain the same more or less continuously.

In American football, the home team has the choice to wear white or its official team colour and the visiting team must wear the opposite. In NCAA Division I college basketball, the home team almost universally wears white uniforms, while the visiting team wears colours. There are exceptions, such as the University of Michigan, Louisiana State University and West Virginia University wearing yellow at home, or the University of Illinois wearing orange at home, if it sufficiently contrasts with the visiting team's uniforms.

Away kits are a recent development in cricket, which has been played in all-white clothing for most of its history. The first professional match played in coloured clothing was in World Series Cricket in Australia in 1979. The first Cricket World Cup to use coloured kits was the 1992 tournament. In the AFL Grand Final, the team that finishes higher during the regular season has the right to choose the colours they play in, with the lower-ranked team to accommodate this accordingly.

The new home playing kit is a fresh take on a traditional design yet remains intrinsically Cowboys. Our signature navy features as the primary colour with accents of grey and yellow. ‘SINCE 1995’ sits proudly between the iconic bulls’ horns on the back of the neck, paying tribute to the rich history of the Cowboys. McCord said players actually prefer the navy uniforms, but that has to do with the fact that they’re so rarely worn.

According to Phil Hecken, "until the mid 1950s, not only was color versus color common in the NFL, it was actually the norm." Even long after the advent of colour television, the use of white jerseys has remained in almost every game. Original hockey jerseys were actually heavily knit sweaters. They were light colour for home games and a dark colour for road games. The reason dark-coloured sweaters were part of the "road" uniform was to hide the dirt the sweaters accumulated. The light or white sweaters were "home" uniforms as the visiting teams necessarily wore the dark. This tradition fit the needs of "home/away" distinctions necessary for black-and-white television.

Teams like the Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers overhauled their looks with fresh outfittings from Nike – albeit, the Bucs’ came with much criticism. Others, like the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, made subtle and welcomed changes that fans were pleased about. Black with orange lettering, orange, and white color options.
